What is 1000 Books Before Kindergarten?

1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a wonderful program aimed at encouraging families to read to their small children. The concept is simple, parents and caregivers read a book (any book) to their newborn, infant, toddler and/or preschooler with the goal of reading 1,000 books before the child starts kindergarten. That sounds like a lot but it’s really not if you think about it. If parents/caregivers read just 1 book a night, they will have read about 365 books in a year. That is 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years. If you consider that most children start kindergarten at around 5 years of age, parents/caregivers have more time than they think.

The national program is sponsored by the 1000 Books Foundation. The 1000 Books Foundation is a Nevada non-profit corporation providing services beneficial to the public interest. The Foundation is operated exclusively for charitable, literary, and educational purposes. The objectives of this organization are to promote reading to newborns, infants, and toddlers and to encourage parent and child bonding through reading.
