The St. Tammany Parish Library encourages families to read 1,000 books with their children before they enter kindergarten. We have three tools for you to use to keep track of the books that you read.

  1. Use our online app.
  2. Download the 1000 BooksFoundation App.
  3. Ask for a paper log at your local branch of the St. Tammany Parish Library

After reading 100 books, visit the library to collect a sticker. When you reach 1000 books your child will receive a certificate. Once a year we will host a party for children who have reached 1000 books.

If you read three books a day to your child in just one year you’ll have read 1,095 books! This program will take anywhere from a few months to a few years to complete. It is self paced. It’s not a race! Even if you read one book a day, that’s 365 books in a year and in three years you will reach the goal! It’s okay if your child wants to read the same book over and over. Repetition is key to learning! Each time you read a book, it counts. You can read books from the Library or from home. If you are able to, record any book that is read to your child. This includes teachers, siblings and at storytime. If you would like suggestions on good books to read to your child, Library staff will gladly help you pick some books. Studies show that reading with your child provides a great opportunity for bonding. And, you are helping them get ready to learn in school.
